From Molotov Cocktails to UAVs: The Story of 20-Year-Old “Molly,” Who Has Been Fighting for Ukraine Since She Was 16

When Russian troops were at the approaches to Kyiv, 16-year-old Viktoriia Bihun — who would later receive the army call sign “Molly” — was making Molotov cocktails for Ukrainian defenders. Today, at just 20 years old, she is a UAV operator in the 42nd Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The young, unmarried servicewoman told the brigade’s communications officers that she has always loved flying. That is why she became a UAV operator.
At the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, she was still underage and found herself under occupation. The enemy destroyed her family home. Her motivation to fight back against the Russians is therefore self-evident.
Her call sign “Molly” (a gamer slang word for Molotov cocktail) dates back to 2022, during the occupation of Kyiv region, when she was making improvised incendiary devices:
“I felt that I was doing something very important. The situation in the country disturbed me back then, and it still does now. But now I am an adult, a conscious person who believes that I can do more for my state — even though I am only 20 years old.”

From Kyiv to Lviv — and into the army
At a certain point, Viktoriia moved from Kyiv to Lviv, and later to Chortkiv in Ternopil region, where she signed her contract with the army. Thanks to the professionalism of recruiters, “Molly” was clearly informed about her position, further steps, and had full support at every stage of the enlistment process.
“I considered different brigades, but I chose the 42nd Mechanized Brigade,” says the young soldier.

“Molly” always had an interest in military affairs
Before her army service, she worked at the “Rukavychka” supermarket as an assistant manager. Yet “Molly” was always fascinated by military matters — she trained on shooting ranges, enjoyed airsoft, and found it fulfilling. In 2025, while living in Lviv, she also joined the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. Within the group Centuria, she received additional knowledge and experience.
“What I value most is honesty. And loyalty to an idea. I hesitated before joining the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but I was certain I would find my place here. This is my personal choice, and it is my life’s path. I want to be useful to my country, especially during wartime. After all, who, if not us — each of us — will help Ukraine win?!” stresses “Molly.”
