During the massive overnight attack on Kyiv on September 7, the building of Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers was struck not by a Shahed drone, but by a 9M727 cruise missile from the Iskander tactical missile system, Defence Express reported, citing sources. The missile’s warhead did not detonate.

Analysis of debris confirmed the type of weapon used. According to Defence Express, the fire on the upper floors of the government building was caused by fuel from the missile’s tanks.

The 9M727, also known as Iskander-K or R-500, is a land-based variant of the Kalibr cruise missile. Russia actively employs it in strikes on Ukrainian cities. The same missile type was used in 2023 to hit the Drama Theatre in Chernihiv.

Experts noted that, had the warhead exploded, the consequences would have been far more devastating.

On the night of September 7, Russia launched 805 drones of various types and 13 missiles across Ukraine. In Kyiv, several residential buildings were damaged; in Sviatoshyn district, three people, including an infant, were killed under the rubble, and at least 20 others were injured. Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Odesa, Kremenchuk, and other cities also came under attack.
