A modern two-volume edition of the piano works by Mykola Vitaliyovych Lysenko, the founder of Ukrainian classical music, has been published in Ukraine. The unique feature of this publication is that each musical score is accompanied by QR codes that allow readers to listen to the pieces directly.

The two-volume collection marks the launch of the multimedia project “Mykola Lysenko. Reloading”, implemented by the state specialized publishing house “Muzychna Ukraina” and the International Lysenko Foundation in partnership with Ukrainian Radio, with financial support from the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.

The edition contains 69 piano compositions by Lysenko — ranging from miniatures and concert pieces to a suite in the form of ancient dances, rhapsodies, and a sonata. The publication is based on printed editions from the 1950s as well as Lysenko’s original manuscripts and self-published scores preserved in museums and private collections. The musical text is preceded by a scholarly introduction on the composer’s individual style and piano legacy, written by Dr. Liubov Kyyanovska, Doctor of Arts and laureate of the Lysenko Prize.

Each piece is accompanied by QR codes linking to its recorded performance. The project “Mykola Lysenko. Reloading” features interpretations of his piano music by renowned performers — Rada Lysenko, Oleksandr Kozarenko, and Yevhen Rzhanov.

In addition, 34 piano pieces — mostly miniatures — received new or, in some cases, first-ever audio recordings as part of the project. The works were performed by Honored Artist of Ukraine Maria Pukhlianko and a group of young pianists: Karina Kaluga, Anastasiia Chesnokova, Oleksandr Oliinyk, Valerii Lesho, Nataliia Sokolenko, and Tymofii Kukorenchuk.
The recordings took place in the Mykola Lysenko Column Hall of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine under the direction of Honored Art Worker of Ukraine Andrii Mokrytskyi.

In partnership with Ukrainian Radio, 20 rare archival recordings of Lysenko’s piano works were selected and published on the Suspilne Mediateka website.

In total, the project presents 90 audio recordings created between 1953 and 2025, performed by 32 pianists from Ukraine and abroad.

The edition has a print run of 1,000 copies, which will be distributed free of charge to secondary and higher music institutions, cultural organizations, charities, NGOs, and libraries in Ukraine and abroad.

A public presentation-concert of Lysenko’s two-volume piano works will take place on October 16, 2025, in the Vasyl Slipak Grand Hall of the National Music Academy of Ukraine.

“The idea of creating a modern edition of Mykola Lysenko’s legacy has long been discussed within our family and among friends,” says Mykola Lysenko, conductor, volunteer, and great-great-grandson of the composer. “We are grateful to Muzychna Ukraina for supporting and realizing this vision, and to the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation for financial backing of the ‘Mykola Lysenko. Reloading’ project.
Lysenko’s music is also our weapon — our cultural ammunition. We must act now, not wait for some ideal future. We cannot give the enemy any chance to claim that we are nobody and that Ukrainian culture does not exist.”

“Lysenko’s piano legacy includes around 70 compositions written throughout his lifetime,” notes Kateryna Sobolieva-Zorkina, head of Muzychna Ukraina. “These are profoundly European works infused with a distinctly Ukrainian character — every melody, every chord breathes Ukraine. The collection features grand virtuoso compositions and lyrical miniatures, baroque dances and ‘songs without words,’ folk arrangements and ceremonial marches.
Thanks to this edition, pianists can select Lysenko’s works according to their preferences, and all music lovers can enjoy their reference-quality sound. We are honored to be part of this project and thank the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation for their trust and support, as well as the International Lysenko Foundation and Ukrainian Radio for their partnership.”

The two-volume piano edition of Mykola Lysenko is the first release of the “Mykola Lysenko. Reloading” project, which aims to produce a comprehensive multimedia publication of the great Ukrainian composer’s complete works.
