The third week of August 2025 ended with the Russian occupying forces showing their worst results since the start of the summer offensive. Despite intense fighting, their territorial gains were minimal, while their losses were record-high.

Territorial "successes" of the enemy

According to monitoring resources, Russian troops captured only 100 km² of Ukrainian territory — the lowest result since the beginning of the summer campaign. Around 20 km² near Dobropillia remain under questionable Russian control, which does not reflect the actual situation on the ground.

Since the beginning of August, the occupiers have advanced a total of 370 km², proving the failure of Moscow’s ambitions to make August the "decisive month" of the offensive. Even on the main axis of their assault — Pokrovsk — Russia has failed to achieve any strategic goals.

Enemy losses

During the third week of August, the Russian army lost 7,120 troops, averaging 71 eliminated soldiers per each square kilometer gained. This ratio became the highest of the summer, but it was achieved not due to any change in Ukrainian tactics, rather because of the slowdown of the Russian advance.

In total, from January 1 to August 1, 2025, Russian forces occupied 2,399 km² of Ukrainian land, losing 263,240 personnel in the process. This equals 109 soldiers killed per km², a worse ratio compared to 2024.

Conclusions

Russia’s summer campaign, despite its intensity, has brought the aggressor no strategic success. The trend of decreasing enemy losses may become a dangerous challenge for Ukraine in autumn and winter — traditionally the deadliest seasons for Russian forces.
