The Pilot Who Brought F-16s to Ukraine: The Story of Fallen Hero Oleksiy "Moonfish" Mes

Ukraine honors the memory of Oleksiy "Moonfish" Mes, a brilliant military pilot who not only defended the skies but also fundamentally changed the country's aviation history by paving the way for F-16 fighter jets to arrive in Ukraine.

Born in 1993 in Shepetivka, Khmelnytskyi region, Oleksiy was a prodigy of Ukrainian aviation. He graduated from school with a gold medal and later completed his studies at the Kharkiv National Air Force University with honors. His exceptional skills were recognized early on; in 2019, he became the first Ukrainian to participate as an observer during an in-flight refueling of an American F-15D fighter jet.

The Crusade for F-16s: Washington Mission

When the full-scale invasion began, Oleksiy, alongside his close friend and fellow pilot Andriy "Juice" Pilshchykov, launched a relentless diplomatic campaign to convince Western allies to provide Ukraine with modern F-16 fighter jets.

In June 2022, the two pilots traveled to Washington, D.C. Accompanied by American actor Sean Penn, they met with U.S. congressmen and did extensive media interviews. Though Oleksiy disliked the spotlight, his flawless English and profound professionalism made him a powerful advocate. Following one of their meetings, Congressman Adam Kinzinger introduced a groundbreaking bill to training Ukrainian pilots and transfer F-16s to Ukraine.

In August 2023, the international coalition finally approved the transfer of the aircraft. "Moonfish" left for training in the UK, where he tragically learned that his friend "Juice" had been killed in a training accident. Unable to attend the funeral, Oleksiy told journalists:

"Andriy was the main engine behind this idea. I feel a deep responsibility to him—these planes must arrive in Ukraine."

Ultimate Sacrifice in the Line of Duty

On August 26, 2024, during a massive Russian missile and drone attack, Oleksiy took to the skies in an F-16. He successfully intercepted and destroyed three cruise missiles and one kamikaze drone, saving countless civilian lives.

Tragically, while maneuvering toward a new target, communication with his aircraft was lost. It was later confirmed that the F-16 had crashed and the 30-year-old pilot had been killed. The exact causes of the crash remain under investigation.

Oleksiy is survived by his parents, two brothers, a sister, his wife, and his three-year-old daughter, Ulyana. Because of his prominence, Russian forces had regularly threatened him, making him deeply protective of his family's safety.

A Final Tribute to a Legend

Oleksiy Mes was laid to rest on August 29, 2024. Hundreds of citizens, fellow pilots, and commanders gathered to pay their respects. In a moving tribute, a pair of MiG-29 fighter jets performed a flyover above the funeral procession. Posthumously, Oleksiy Mes was promoted to the rank of Colonel.

Though his life was cut short at just 30 years old, "Moonfish" accomplished a historic mission. He didn't just pilot aircraft; he altered the course of Ukrainian military history, fought for the F-16s, became one of the first to master them, and died defending the skies of his homeland.
