Commander of Ukraine’s “Birds” Unit Issues Harsh Response to Hungarian Officials

On August 28, 2025, the commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces unit “Birds,” known by the call sign “Madyar,” published a statement in response to remarks from Hungarian officials regarding sanctions and travel restrictions.
Soldier’s Reaction
In his address, Madyar emphasized that as both a Ukrainian soldier and an ethnic Hungarian, he chooses active resistance over formal political gestures when facing threats.
“Shove your sanctions and travel bans into your pocket, ‘grave-dancer.’ I am Ukrainian, and I will arrive at my Father’s Homeland after you,” the commander declared.
Criticism of Energy Interests
He also accused Hungarian authorities of defending their own economic gains rather than true sovereignty, pointing to continued dependence on Russian oil:
“By lobbying for the ‘Druzhba’ pipeline, you are not protecting Hungary’s sovereignty but your dirty pockets. Buying cheap sanctioned crude makes you complicit in fueling Russia’s bloody money — the same money that returns as missiles and Shaheds against peaceful Ukrainian cities.”
Context: Tragedy in Kyiv
Madyar issued his reaction on the same day Russia launched a massive attack on Kyiv, killing dozens of civilians, including children.
Kyiv Summons Hungarian Ambassador
On the same day, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Hungarian ambassador in Kyiv, delivering a protest note over Budapest’s decision to ban entry for Robert “Madyar” Brovdi. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha condemned the move as discriminatory against Ukraine’s Hungarian minority. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also criticized Hungary, noting that while Russian strikes were killing civilians in Kyiv, Hungarian officials chose instead to target an ethnic Hungarian fighting for Ukraine’s defense.
