Hungarian President removed mention of Russia from post about Mukachevo strike

Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok has come under criticism after removing a reference to Russia from his Facebook post about the missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Mukachevo, which was hit during a mass attack on the night of August 21. The change was first noticed by Hungarian media outlets Telex, 444.hu, and the local service of Radio Free Europe.

How the post changed

In the original version of the message, Sulyok explicitly referred to a “Russian missile strike.” The post read:

“I express my deepest condolences to those injured in the Russian missile strike on Mukachevo and wish them a speedy and full recovery.”

However, less than an hour later, the word “Russian” was deleted. The revised post offered sympathy to Mukachevo residents but avoided directly naming the aggressor state.

Journalists noted that they have sent an official request to the Hungarian president’s office asking why the change was made.

Context of the attack

On the night of August 21, Russian forces launched another massive drone and missile strike against Ukrainian cities. For the first time since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Mukachevo — located just 30 km from the Hungarian border — was targeted. According to the latest reports, at least 19 people were injured in the city.
