Russia's Largest Attack on Kyiv: Critically Ill Children Dying Due to Destroyed Medical Equipment at Ohmatdyt
On July 8, 2024, nearly 40 tactical and ballistic missiles from Russia hit Kyiv, including the country's main children's hospital, Ohmatdyt. This attack led to the destruction of crucial medical equipment used for treating cancer patients and other critical cases.
The damage was extensive, affecting 8 out of 10 city districts, with numerous casualties. Rescue operations were carried out in multiple locations, and the attack has resulted in severe long-term impacts on healthcare services for children.
Dead Adults and Children. Dozens Killed, Hundreds Injured.
This is not a war just for land. It is an existential war. Russians want Ukrainian territory without Ukrainians. Everything related to Ukraine is being destroyed. A century ago, Russians killed Ukrainian women and children, starved people, and destroyed the elite. It happened then, and it is happening now.
Instead of "closing the sky" over Ukraine, the world hints that "peace is needed."
The war in Ukraine began in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and the occupation of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The world ignored Vladimir Putin's ambitions. Now, the full-scale war in Ukraine has been ongoing for three years due to global indifference.
In the third year of this war, Russian occupiers have shown their true nature: mass rapes, torture, executions of civilians, mass graves, and the destruction of entire apartment buildings with missiles. Yet, there is no reaction from the world. Still none.
Russian Missile X-101 Contained Over 50 Western ComponentsThe Russian X-101 missile that struck the children's hospital "Ohmatdyt" on July 8 contained more than 50 Western components, reports Financial Times. This indicates that Russia obtained these parts through the open market and imports from China, circumventing sanctions. Without these components, Russia couldn't produce its weapons. Unfortunately, the enemy evades sanctions, necessitating stricter control.Critically Ill Children Left Without HelpOhmatdyt's director, Volodymyr Zhovnir, spoke at the UN Security Council. At the time of the attack, over 600 patients and nearly as many staff were in the hospital. Medical personnel were performing three heart surgeries, one with an open chest.Children were on IVs, dialysis, and in intensive care.
“Our patients will not receive proper care. Our specialized services with high-quality equipment will not be available in the near future. We will face serious long-term consequences for children's medical treatment. This is not just a war crime. It is beyond humanity,” stated Volodymyr Zhovnir.
World politicians pretend to be concerned fools who believe that serious agreements can be made with those who launch missiles at children's hospitals and maternity wards, kindergartens, and schools, and then hope that they will faithfully fulfill their obligations. Seriously?
Today, Russian occupiers disregard the lives of other people's children, and tomorrow they will disregard the lives of yours.
Watch how Putin kills children and adults (video). This video shows a child injured by an RF missile attack on the Ohmatdyt hospital. Mykyta is only 2 years old.
There are thousands of such children in Ukraine. They cannot be protected in the rear because the world is against closing the sky over Ukraine.
These are the first moments after the strike on the hospital. The video was taken by a mother who is screaming in despair because she doesn't know if her child is alive. A child's hand is sticking out of the window, the body is under the debris.
The pediatric hospital sustained damage to its intensive care, surgical, and oncology departments. Two buildings are beyond repair following the Russian attack.
At the moment of the strike, an 8-month-old baby was already on the operating table. "We were lucky that we hadn’t started the operation yet," wrote Hlib Yemets, a pediatric cardiac surgeon at the Center for Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, under this photo.
In this photo is pediatric maxillofacial surgeon Oleh Holubchenko. His picture, in a blood-soaked white uniform, was circulated by global media. Just a few minutes earlier, Oleh was operating on a five-month-old patient and immediately started clearing the debris.
The pediatric nephrologist, 30-year-old Svitlana Lukianchuk, was killed.
This missile destroyed the children's hospital "Ohmatdyt" in Kyiv. As you can see, it was not damaged by air defense systems. The strike was deliberate.
A second before the strike: this is what the underpass near the children's hospital "Ohmatdyt" looked like during the shelling.
"This is a residential building. As a result of the missile attack, an entire section was destroyed. People are screaming under the rubble."
"The moment a woman was rescued from the rubble of a building in the Shevchenkivskyi district. The woman is alive."
"This is the ADONIS medical center, destroyed by a drone. Of the seven people killed, five were medical center staff and two were patients. One of the deceased gynecologists, Svitlana Poplavska, left behind three children. The youngest is only two years old.
A dashcam recorded the moment of the impact."
Women covered in blood after the impact:
Thank you, but no thanks
Ukraine does not need words of support and empathy after a direct hit by a Russian missile on a hospital full of children. We need actions.
Ukraine does not need "strong condemnations" of the aggressor country after the genocide when, in June 2023, Russian military blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Station dam from the inside, and over 18 billion cubic meters of water destroyed cities and villages in its path – drowning people and domestic animals. We need actions.
Today, Russia threatens terrorist attacks in the capital of Ukraine, promising new tens of thousands of victims: to blow up the Kyiv Hydroelectric Station and the Kaniv Reservoir. This would flood half of the capital, with countless casualties.
"Peace at any cost." Consequences for Ukraine and the world
The rhetoric of "Together to victory" has changed to "achieving a just peace." The world is pushing Ukraine towards peace on Russia's terms. But even after a truce or freezing of hostilities, the war will not end.On July 11, 2024, Dmitry Medvedev, the so-called "reserve president of the Russian Federation," called for preparations to fully capture Ukraine after the signing of a peace treaty.
"The time will come to finally crush the reptile...
We must do everything to ensure that Ukraine's 'irreversible path' to NATO ends either with the disappearance of Ukraine or the disappearance of NATO. Preferably both."Author: Olha Cherniavska
