According to his words, Vashunin was mortally wounded on July 14, when he and his squad tried to help the Storm's occupants who were surrounded.

He claims that the leader of the occupiers with a support group came forward to meet the squad. Their movement was noticed by the Ukrainian military and a battle began. During the clash, Colonel Vashunin was "cut off from his fellow soldiers" and seriously wounded. He died.

"Fontanka" adds that the "Leningrad regiment" was formed mainly from St. Petersburg mobilized.
