The writer Victoria Amelina died of injuries after the Russian attack on Kramatorsk. At the time of the terrorist attack, she was in the Ria Lounge restaurant with a delegation of Colombian journalists and writers.

Ukrainian writer and public figure Viktoriya Amelina died as a result of injuries received as a result of an attack by Russian troops on Kramatorsk. This was announced by the Ukrainian PEN club.

"It is with great pain that we inform you that the heart of the writer Viktoria Amelina stopped beating in the Mechnikov Hospital in Dnipro. Her life ended due to a non-life-threatening injury caused by a rocket attack by the Russian occupiers on a restaurant in Kramatorsk on June 27, 2023. We are reporting this news now, when all of Victoria's relatives found out about her and with their consent," the organization says.

Amelina, 37, was at the Ria Lounge restaurant with a delegation of Colombian journalists and writers when the building was struck.

After the start of the full-scale invasion, Victoria Amelina was involved in documenting Russian war crimes as part of the human rights organization Truth Hounds. In particular, as indicated by the PEN club, she found the diary of the writer Volodymyr Vakulenko, who was killed by the Russian occupiers in the liberated Izyum Oblast.

The writer also worked on a book in English, War and Justice Diary: Looking at Women Looking at War, about women documenting Russian war crimes. The club will announce her exit abroad soon.

The writer was also engaged in active advocacy work: she appealed to the governments of other countries to provide weapons to Ukraine, and also demanded justice and the creation of a special international tribunal for all perpetrators of Russian war crimes against Ukraine, spoke about the joint anti-colonial struggle of Ukrainians and other peoples of the world.

Victoria Amelina (maiden name Shalamai) is a Ukrainian writer, a member of the Ukrainian PEN. She was born on January 1, 1986 in Lviv. During her school years, she moved to Canada with her father , but soon decided to return to Ukraine. In 2007, she obtained a master's degree in computer technologies with honors at Lviv Polytechnic. In 2005–2015, she worked in international technology companies.

In 2015, Amelina suspended her career in information technology to devote herself to writing. In 2016, her first children's book "Someone, or Watery Heart" was published. Her next book for children, "E-stories of Eka the Excavator", was published in 2021.

In 2017, the "Stary Lev Publishing House" published Victoria's second novel "Home for Home". The book was shortlisted for national and international awards: "LitAccent of the Year - 2017", UNESCO City of Literature Award, European Literature Award. The Zaporizhia Book Society named "Home for Home" the best prose book of the year.

Viktoria Amelina's texts were published in Polish, Czech, German, Dutch and English translations. Recently, the novel "Home for Home" was translated into Spanish.

In 2021, Victoria became a laureate of the Joseph Konrad-Kozhenovsky Literary Prize. In the same year, she founded the New York Literary Festival, which took place in the village of New York in the Bakhmut district of the Donetsk region.

Thus, 13 people are currently known to have died as a result of the attack on Kramatorsk on June 27 – when Russian troops launched two missile strikes on the center of Kramatorsk and the private sector of Bilenkoy near the city, causing numerous civilian casualties and destruction. Among the dead were three children, and about 60 people were injured.
