The United States will supply MIM2 HIMARS missile launchers to Ukraine .
The head of the White House wrote about the transfer of weapons in his author's column in the New York Times.
President Joe Biden said on Tuesday, May 31, that the United States would provide Ukraine with more advanced missile systems and ammunition so that the Ukrainian military could "more accurately hit key targets on the battlefield."
According to the President of the United States, the purpose of arms transfer is simple: the United States wants to see a democratic, independent, sovereign and prosperous Ukraine with the means to deter and protect against further aggression.
"We will provide Ukrainians with more advanced missile systems and ammunition that will allow them to more accurately hit key targets on the battlefield in Ukraine," Biden said.
The Voice of America writes that after Biden's article was published, a senior US administration official told reporters on condition of anonymity that HIMARS missile systems would be provided to Ukraine.
"These systems will be used by Ukrainians to repel Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory, but they will not be used to strike at Russian territory," he said.
In addition, Washington will continue to supply Ukraine with modern weapons, including:
- Javelin anti-tank missiles;
- Stinger anti-aircraft missiles;
- powerful artillery and high-precision missile systems;
- radars;
- unmanned aerial vehicles;
- Mi-17 helicopters;
- various ammunition.
This will be the 11th military aid package approved so far, and it will be the first to use $ 40 billion recently approved by Congress.
The media report that HIMARS for Ukraine will be equipped with ammunition that will hit targets at a distance of about 80 kilometers (49 miles).
He noted that these weapons will strengthen the combat capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to repel Russia's full-scale invasion.
The M142 HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) uses a 6-wheeled M1140 FMTV tactical truck as its chassis. The launcher can be used as a rocket-propelled grenade launcher (MLRS) and as an operational and tactical missile system.
